A sensational mix: French and Mexican decor

The combination of French and Mexican styles is quite stunning, even more so considering these are homes designed with the needs of a family in mind.

This is a dream-come-true combination for those who admire the look of "rustic elegance" that the design house known as Casamidy is known for. The above photo combines furniture and accessories that are included in their 2010 collection.

Casamidy is most known for its modern-looking furniture and accessories whose design is rooted in tradition going back hundreds of years. I do love admiring the detail on the headboard here (even more watching a video of how tinsmiths in Mexico create these).

I stumbled upon them while reading a blog post on the Canadian House and Home magazine web site about modern Mexican style. I found out Casamidy started a Facebook page just a few months ago and enjoyed seeing so many beautiful interior shots of the homes created by the creative powers behind Casamidy: wife-and-husband team, Anne-Marie Midy and Jorge Almada.

According to information on their Facebook page, Anne-Marie, whose father is French, grew up in Paris and the south of France. Jorge, who was raised in Sonora, Mexico, had a Mexican father. Both of their moms were from the Midwest in the United States. Anne-Marie, a former art director at Martha Stewart Living, and Jorge met in the United States while pursuing design interests.

I mention their background only because they draw heavily from their experiences and cultures in their designs. The photo above shows their Paris home (which is available for a weekly rental of $1,850).

The couple have two little boys, as reflected in this charming vignette with the awesome view of the Paris skyline.

Casamidy has showrooms in Brussels, Belgium and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, shown above.

Vintage items repurposed to create a home

You know how it goes. You're on the Internet and you click on something you like, you click again ... and again ... and again. Many clicks later, you realize an hour or more has passed since you last looked up from the computer.

I was doing some "research" on the ohdeehdoh website, looking at photos of kids' rooms to give me ideas on tweaking my own kids' room when I happened upon:

Ohdeehdoh often features beautiful and interesting kids' rooms but this one in Denmark really took my breath away. The room just seems so eclectic and fun, with so many unique and handmade touches.

Tracy Nors, the mom who decorated the room and is a mixed media artist, wrote some suggestions for more novice decorators: "For a child's room it is important to include the child at the ideas stage. Listen to what they like and what they can contribute. Children's own drawings and paintings can be hung on the walls or an image transferred to fabric and used as a cushion. They can be part of making garland or flags to hang around the room. This way, they will have a connection with it and love it all the more." (Read all her suggestions and ideas here.)

Image: ohdeedoh. I have three of these printers' trays just waiting for a reno and love the idea of displaying some of my kids' tiny treasures in each box.

Image: ohdeehdoh. A white shelf allows the bright colors on these vintage toys to stand out.

I thought of all the time we, as parents, invest in decorating our kids' rooms but wondered how often we call on our own kids to contribute their ideas and talents. I'm afraid I'm guilty of not doing that too often. Sure, I've hung my kids' artwork in their rooms and bought items at flea markets that they liked and wanted for their room, but have I ever asked their opinion on the overall look for their room? Nope.

I know my kids are only two and four years old, but, believe me, they already have definite ideas about what they like. This lady has some very smart advice, I thought. So, I wondered what else this mom had to say about decor and clicked on over to her website, Boboho, The Art of Interiors.

Wow! I found myself touring homes featuring these wonderful images:

Tracy's own home. To see a full tour of her home (and how her son's nursery looked like before it was converted into a little boy's room) click here.

The Boboho website is chock full of great links to websites and eco-friendly designers because, as I found out when I clicked on over to Tracy's blog, I discovered she's "addicted to vintage things and fabric" she hoards in a cabinet. She's a big believer in repurposing and renovating. A truly inspiring artist and mom in my book, don't you think?

Have a great weekend.

Creative mom series: Multi-talented designer imparts "thoughtful loveliness"

The home of artist and designer Gina Amoroso

Today, I have a litle treat for you as you head into the weekend. Think of it as a dose of "thoughtful loveliness" in this second installment of my "creative moms" series.

Artist and designer Gina Amoroso describes herself as a "maker by nature," someone who has always made a living in a creative field, starting out as a photojournalist and currently a graphic designer for a company in France. On the side, she further feeds her passion for creating by designing beautifully feminine pillows she sells through her Etsy shop.

Gina working on one of her creations at home

In her blog, Hettle (the name of her son's pet bunny), she writes that she hopes her blog brings a little bit of "thoughtful loveliness" to her readers. Getting to know Gina a little bit via several e-mails and reading her blog writings, I would have to say that all her creations are thoughtful loveliness, imparting a quiet beauty that I'm happy to share with you today.

Vivian Mansour of Ish and Chi included one of Hettle's pillows in her son's nursery

Gina writes in her blog about everything that inspires her: her "lulus" (kids), fashion, music and other artists on Etsy and elsewhere. She's a multi-talented woman who approaches all her creative endeavors with gusto. I would recommend checking out her blog for a great tutorial on block printing on fabric and an ongoing series she has titled, "What Inspires You?" I hope you enjoy my interview with Gina.

Gina also creates block prints

How long have you been creating pillow designs and how did it all start? What was your expertise in working on these types of projects?

Well, I guess I am a "maker" by nature. I have never had a job that, in some way or another I wasn't making something, teaching how to make something, or doing something creative. I do have a formal education in art, and my BFA is in photography and printmaking.

My professional career began in photojournalism, which at that time was a dream job. All of my artwork has a strong narrative quality to it, so I think I'm always telling a story in some way.

I believe the narrative to my Etsy shop is simply something playful, pretty, and family friendly. I used to teach sculpture and learning how to work with fabric led me to take lessons from a seamstress. I learned how to make my own patterns, mostly dresses. Fashion is definitely where my inspiration comes from.

Gina sewed this skirt, inspired by a similar one she saw on J. Crew

How does running your Etsy shop tie in with your full-time job as a graphic designer?

I am a contracted employee so I work from an office in my home, which is also my work space for making things. My hours are not rigid. Sometimes I can go a week without any projects, which leaves me time to spend on creating something with my hands. It's a real treat to be able to push away from my computer and swing to the other side of the room and play with some fabric.

Do you have other creative ambitions?

Of course! Having an outlet like an Etsy shop has motivated me to get back to making art with my drawings, block prints and photographs. I am opening another shop soon ( Telling Stories.etsy.com). I'm so excited to do this and I have been working very hard to put together some special things to share that mean a lot to me, specifically images that are feminine, powerful and beautiful.

Gina's kids at home

You have two kids ( Lucas, 7 and Louisa, 5 ) who I'm sure keep you quite busy. How do you combine your role as mom with that of an Etsy entrepreneur?

What are the sacrifices that you have to make to keep your home running smoothly, yet keep your creative juices flowing and your business flourishing?

Wow! Well first, I will come clean and say that, recently, I have struggled with keeping things running smoothly. It is a balancing act and figuring out what comes first, second and third.....is a work in progress. I run with people first and, as for second and third ... it's a toss up.

I can usually tell when things are getting out of hand when my living room is so littered with toys, books and shoes that I think the only way to tackle it is with a rake and shovel. It is also helpful to me to just get out of my studio for an entire day- even if it's just for shopping or looking at art or doing some gardening. This helps me re-charge and re-focus.

Who are the artists, visual and otherwise who inspire you and how?

(hard question!) So many artists, but just to name a few: Joseph Cornel, Robert Ryman, Sally Mann, Duane Micheals, Robert Frank. For me, these artists have a mix of power and intimacy in them that's appealing.

Gina's desk

I love music. Daily, I find something to match my day and motivate me. My Dad was a musician and it has always been something I need to enjoy every day. Music can change the mood instantly. Sometimes, dinnertime at my house can be a little nuts, and that's when I put the music on loud and instruct my kids to "dance it out." Very effective!

I also Flip for fashion. I love pretty much everything that Stella McCartney does and getting Harper's Bazaar in the mail every month is a little piece of heaven for me. Would you like to share some of your favorite Etsy finds or stores? Yes! mummysam for wonderful fabric sculptures; sohomode and sohomodekids for a wonderful mix of vintage/modern clothing; emilyryan for modern original clothing, Chad Wys Fine Art for beautiful paintings.

mummysam's soft creations are one of Gina's favorites on Etsy

Often, I hear creative people say that their own kids are an inspiration for their work. Would you say this is true for you?

I honestly don't believe that they inspire the work that I do, but rather the lifestyle. I do feel that every morning they wake up with a brightness for a new day that just makes me want to jump in with both feet and get going.

Gina's kids

Also, I want them to see me working at something creative and making a living doing so. I hope I can set an example and encourage my children to go out and pursue what makes them happy and fulfilled. At the end of the day, I want them to be inspired by more than a paycheck. (But the paycheck is s important too!)

Gina's art-filled home

What are some of your favorite objects from home?

Some of my favorite things are from places where I have traveled. New Mexico is someplace I find magical and visit as often as possible. Each time I am there, Ilike to bring back some pottery or jewelry made by a local artist. Our home has many wonderful works of art that I have collected over the years. Each means something different, and brings me back to that piece of time when it came into our home.

Thank you, Gina for generously sharing your story with us. You can find her on Etsy here and on her blog.

Creative mom: Singer finds new bliss teaching music

"I learned how hard work and constant practice can achieve not only great results musically, but can change and mold a person's character as well," Maya Guerrero, former opera singer now children's music instructor

Maya encourages silly dancing at her Music Together classes.

Today, I'm proud to announce the debut of my "Creative Mom" series to to showcase talented women in our midst and to inspire moms everywhere to find new ways to allow their creative selves to emerge. Along with finding out what inspires these moms, I'm asking them how they balance their family responsibilities with their creative passions so we can all glean some tips.

Opera singer Maya Guerrero is a great example of someone who has found a way to continue sharing her musical talent with others even though her primary focus these days is her four-year-old son, Vijay. Maya and I met, appropriately enough, at an ampitheatre near our homes more than two years ago as our sons played together.

Maya travelled with her husband and son on a trip to India, Fiji and Tasmania last year. Here, her son, Vijay, enjoys a walk in Tasmania with a cousin.

We soon began spending time together and discovered a shared love of The Beatles, travel and a yearning to reconnect with our creative selves. Just last week, Maya wrapped up her first quarter of classes for young kids under the Music Together program, a dream that materialized after much researching, planning and training.

I wanted to write about Maya because she is a kind person, as warm-hearted and generous with her friendship as she is musically talented. She is the kind of person who you would want not only as your children's music instructor, but as someone in your circle of friends. Though she's clearly at home on the stage singing, at heart, Maya feels the most joy connecting with nature and loved ones, as she reveals in her idea of a perfect day. The best introduction for why I chose Maya as the first creative mom in the series comes by way of this video of Maya singing a few years ago.

Maya sings "Voi Che Sapete" from The Marriage of Figaro by Mozart at a college faculty recital.

Here she answers my questions about her creative pursuits:

What is your creative passion?

My creative passion comes in the way of singing as a way to express myself. I love the way that singing feels. I'll sing anywhere, at the bus stop, walking my dog, in the kitchen. Singing to me is an outlet, something that I feel at home doing. I also love to see people change and grow in their appreciation of what music can do in their lives. Music making is a way to connect to your soul. That's why children are so open and free at feeling and expressing music.

What sparked your interest in music?

When I was very young (elementary school), my mother was surprised that I was able to harmonize to the songs on the radio without even really knowing the song. My ear would just pick up the tune and I would harmonize to it. Because it was natural to me and not taught, I realized from an early age that music would play an important role in my life.

Maya's mother, Gwat, whose name means moon in the Chinese language of Fujian.

My mother was the biggest influence of music and culture in my youth. She would sing to me in her native language of Indonesian, and expose our family to all kinds of cultural events: Gamelan concerts, East Indian films and music, Japanese festivals, marionettes, opera, ballet, shadow puppet plays, art museums. I think that because of so much exposure to different cultures and their music, dance, art and food, I have an open mind towards all cultures (artistically that is) and I try to actively embrace them and their differences.

My mother also supported all of my musical interests like singing in choir and learning to play the guitar and cello. I joined the guitar club in sixth grade and then in seventh grade joined my junior high school orchestra class. So the schools that I went to had a lot to do with my musical growth as well. My dad's biggest influence on me musically is his childlike spirit. My father (Anandamoy Bhattacharjie) is very encouraging and derives great joy from simple things like trees and birds. I try to bring that spirit of wonder and play to my teaching because children love that!

It really wasn't until high school that the biggest musical influence of my life appeared in the form of a choral conductor named Phyllis Zimmerman. Because of her great passion for music and discipline in knowing how to musically get what she wanted from us, I learned how hard work and constant practice can not only achieve great results musically, but also can change and mold a person's character.

What role does music play in your life now?

Music plays a bigger role than ever in my home now that I am doing Music Together. My family listens to me practice constantly, and I like to try out new ideas on them to see if something works or not. My husband and son come to class every week so that we can implement music-making into our home life as well. The downside to all of this musical goodness is the time that it takes to start a business. My goal is to find that balance between family time and work time.

Jesus Guerrero, Maya's husband, enjoyed father-son time while Maya traveled to Northern California for a few days of music training.

Would you mind elaborating on how you arrange your schedule as a mom to accommodate music activities/teaching?

The way that I've handled the time consuming - marketing/website building part of the business has been to drink a lot of coffee and stay up late into the wee hours of the morning. I feel as though sometimes time stops when I am in front of the computer, and so does the cleaning. You could say that I have more than my fair share of dust bunnies hopping around my house.

There are many nights where I don't cook and we have to improvise on the dinner menu. I really did not know how time consuming it was going to be until I started doing it.

Luckily, I have the most supportive husband one could ever imagine. As for my son, I make time to do two or three things a day with him so that we have our special bonding time. We take our dog on walks, go on outings with the moms club that we belong to, or just spend time lying on the ground playing games with our imagination. It's my last summer with him before he starts kindergarten, so I'm relishing it but it's also bitter-sweet.

How do inspire your son, Vijay, to embrace music, as well?

I try to expose Vijay to a wide variety of music making and listening activities. When he was a baby, I was always dancing and singing to him. We noticed that he liked to bang things a lot so when he was two years old we bought him his first drum set. He has an electric piano in his room and plays me a song on it every night before bedtime. He has a guitar that he'll make up songs on as well.

I love hearing his compositions, it's always about something from our everyday lives like taking the dog on a walk or about a bug. He loves insects. Sometimes I'll bring out my cello and he'll use the bow to make music on it. We listen to music quite a bit also, a little bit of everything. I try not to show him how to do anything musically, I just let him explore instruments himself and he learns by watching me do musical stuff.

It's been a blessing to live so close to (an) amphitheater. I love to take Vijay to the live concerts, art shows and other cultural community events that they have. I want my family to have a cultural connection to the community. It's important to me.

Your favorite type of music and musicians?

It's hard to say what my favorite type of music is. My first obsession with music was when I was in elementary school with a group called The Andrew Sisters. I heard their music in a shopping mall and knew immediately that I had to have an album. I would sit in front of the record player for hours listening to those harmonies, just mesmerized. I did the same thing when I discovered The Beatles and later in high school when I discovered opera. I guess my favorite music is the music that has a connection to my heart and soul...doesn't matter the genre.

Maya and her sister, Indira, visited the Taj Mahal in their father's native India last year.

What inspires you?

Nature inspires me to go deeper within myself, so does music. My husband and son inspire me to be a better person. My sister inpires me to be eco-friendly. My friends inspire me to keep dreaming for the future.

What is your idea of a perfect day?

My idea of a perfect day would be to go camping with my family. Hiking, exploring nature, great food cooked on an open fire, and in the evening, singing songs around the campfire ... and of course, s'mores!

Most treasured possession in your home?

My most treasured possesion in my house is my wedding album. That was one of the most amazing days of my life! I married late in life. To me, it is a miracle that I was able to meet and fall in love with such an amazing person as my husband. I am so grateful to have him in my life!
